About this book

August 1791, Spithead roads. Two years after the mutiny on the Bounty, William Bligh sails again for Tahiti with the same mission: to take on breadfruit and carry it to the West Indies. This time he commands two ships, the Providence and the Assistant, and brings an escort of marines.

By way of Tenerife, the Cape and Adventure Bay in Van Diemen's Land, he keeps his log day by day: the winds, the soundings, the health of the crew. At Matavai he finds an island at war, shipwrecked Englishmen and echoes of his mutineers. Tynah brings back the portrait of Cook, a Tahitian woman tells what became of Christian and his men, and Bligh watches as a passionate witness the marae, the funerals and the ranks of the chiefs, while hundreds of plants take root in their pots.

Then comes the return, hold and deck loaded with young trees: Fiji, the reefs of Torres Strait where canoes armed with bows attack the ships, Timor, the Indian Ocean, St Helena. Aboard travels Mydiddee, a young Tahitian who wanted to see England.

Will Bligh at last keep his promise to the king, and at what cost to those who followed him?

William Bligh

Log of the Proceedings of His Majesty's Ship Providence (1791-1793)

William Bligh was born in 1754, most likely in Plymouth, and joined the navy in 1770. Master of the Resolution under Cook on the third voyage, he later commanded the Bounty, whose crew mutinied in April 1789; he reached Timor in an open boat. In 1791-1793 he sailed again with the Providence and succeeded in carrying breadfruit to the West Indies. He fought at Camperdown and Copenhagen, was deposed in 1808 in the Rum Rebellion in New South Wales, and died in London in 1817.
